THE POWER OF WORDS

Sarah Wilcox - 23 February 2025

Words have power. They shape how we view our bodies, our abilities, and our recovery
A single phrase from a well-meaning doctor can stay with someone for years, sometimes a lifetime. In rehab, they can mean the difference between fear and progress. There is no doubt, doctors, surgeons, and specialists play a crucial role in diagnosis and treatment. But physiotherapists, physical therapists, and rehab professionals help bridge the gap between medical intervention and real-world recovery, guiding people back to movement.
Hearing that your knee is “bone on bone” or "your spine is crumbling” can feel like a life sentence. But these phrases, often used to describe imaging results, don’t always reflect function or pain levels. Many people return to full, active lives despite what their scans show (Brinjikji et al. 2015). Research confirms that how health professionals communicate directly impacts recovery (Wertli et al., 2014).
Catastrophic language fuels fear, making people avoid movement because they believe they’re fragile. This fear can lead to chronic pain, decreased activity and a decline in overall well-being. Darlow et al. (2013) found that negative language about back pain, like calling the spine “damaged” or “deteriorating” increases distress and discourages movement-based recovery. But movement is key. The body is resilient, and recovery isn’t about returning to where you were, it’s about progressing beyond it.
Let’s choose words that empower and move you forward.
